Priorities 2009 - 2011
Roadwise This is an initiative in partnership with The Institute of Advanced Motoring, PSNI and NIFRS to provide advanced motoring skills to young people in the 17 - 24 age bracket, with the purpose of contributing to a reduction in road traffic accidents in the Western Board area. Development includes 3 targeted programmes; - Pre license training in schools - Training for those with driving convictions - Roadwise for 17 - 24 year old male drivers Dates are now been coordinated for the 2010 - 2011 courses and will be advertised shortly. ********************** Cross Border Road Safety Challenge Limavady Road Safety Committee facilitates a day of test driving for FE Colleges on both sides of the border. The event raises awareness of driving conditions and utilises the emergency services to promote safer driving to young people. The date for the 2010 event is being finalised and will be advertised shortly. ********************** Anchor Programme Last year Western IFH worked with the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service and the Commmunity Safety Partnerships to refer young people onto the LIFE scheme. Further to an external evaluation of IFH's involvement with the LIFE scheme, the Teenage Transition group development a follow on to the LIFE programme, called the 'Anchor Programme', in partnership with WELB, Youth Justice Agency NI and the Development Media Workshop. The rollout of Year 2 of the programme is currently under planning. ********************** Active Families Programme The Active Families programme is a role modelling initiative which aims to promote an increase in physical activity among people from disadvantaged areas and groups across the western area. The aim of the Active Families programme is to improve lifestyle choices through the involvement of parents or guardians and teenagers on a 12 week programme. The initiative addresses a broad range of lifestyle issues and focuses on the benefits of increased physical activity. With its emphasis on positive role modeling Active Families ultimately aims to increase life expectancy delivering preventive messages on the main risk factors of coronary heart disease and alcohol misuse by conveying these messages through the delivery of an enjoyable programme. The Active Families Programme recently hosted several information events in each council area, launching this years new application process, for training and delivery. 10 successful organisations were announced for this years roll out, with the specialised Active Families programme training starting 19th May and running for 7 consecutive Wednesdays. Throughout, the training organisations, with support and coordination, will be promoting their programmes at various local events and recruiting families in order to set programme roll out dates over this for coming year. ********************** Reflective School Blazers Investing for Health is providing support funding to Lisnaskea High School and St Colmcille's School in Lisnaskea in an effort to combat road safety in the Lisnaskea area. This will ensure better visibility for rural students to and from school in order to keep them safe on the roads. ********************** Road Safety Events in Partnership with PSNI There will be a number of road safety events, corrdinated by PSNI in partnership with Northern Ireland Ambulance Services and Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue. These events will raise awareness of driving conditions and utilises the emergency services to promote safer driving to young people. There will be Track Skills Days, Skid Car Days and Under 17 Driving expereinces.
